Global Mamas

Global Mamas

Global Mamas was founded in 2002 with the goal of providing sustainable work for women entrepreneurs in Ghana. Starting with only 6 original batikers and seamstresses in Cape Coast, Ghana the organization quickly grew to over 700 members in 7 different communities with traditional skills including sewing, batiking, bead making and shea butter production. Global Mamas is partnered with over 300 retailers around the globe as well as the international volunteer organization Women in Progress, which provides support in a variety of areas such as IT, design, PR and business training for the women. Global Mamas is committed to Fair Trade and is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and The World Fair Trade Organization.

The mission of Global Mamas is to enhance the international marketplace with unique, high-quality, hand-made African products while offering a sustainable livelihood to women and their families. As such, is also important to point out that Global Mamas is the name brand for goods produced by small women-owned businesses in Ghana and is recognized by the government of Ghana as an NGO. Women in Progress (WIP), an international non-profit organization, supports the women of Global Mamas in attaining economic independence by coordinating the volunteer and intern programs. Volunteers and interns supply Global Mamas with skills and creativity. All proceeds made by Global Mamas sales go directly to the women producing the merchandise and to the business development programs that assist the women in expanding their businesses.
